Where to start...

AT&T has officially declared that they will provide U-Verse service in NC. This is what has allowed Time Warner to cancel agreements with many municipalities, including Chapel Hill, governing public access TV, etc. (Thanks to state laws passed recently) But just because they say they will provide service means little. It does mean it has taken away our local representatives ability to audit inaccurate bills or negotiate how TW uses our right of ways to transport their services. If you want to complain about your TW service you have to take it up with the NC Attorney General.

As for other similar speed options to Time Warner... there are not any in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. DSL and T1 is not comparable to 2MB and 5MB synchronous Cable Modems. From what I've read about U-Verse neither is it.

We live under a shifting state sponsored monopoly/duopoly that uses ancient definitions of what broadband is. It will continue to stifle innovation, widen the digital divide, and slow the creation of new jobs in our state until we do something.

Sadly, I don't think U-Verse or FIOS are available in NC.

I probably won't dump until it comes to my area. Then I'll look at FIOS and AT&T U-Verse. With the Roku there is really no need for cable (except during basketball season, argh), so I'll be happy to have Time Warner out of my home altogether.

according to The Consumerist.com (http://consumerist.com/5192997/time-warner-cable-expands-metered-billing-to-four-more-cities) TimeWarner is expanding this to several cities.

the question is, though, who are you going to switch to? i'm all for dumping TW as well, but i'm not sure what the best alternative is.
