[...] On the other hand, it’s also often fairly easy to prototype and even do large-scale test deployments of software (i.e., try living with) in a way that simply isn’t possible with large buildings or urban development projects. These prototypes and field tests often let designers learn many of the unintended consequences. (Of course, you only learn about the group you test the app with.) [...]

Thx Fred for a great reading experience! As an old student of both Goffman and Granovetter I can't help making another link to Silicon Valley's embedded social network structure, as pointed out by Mark Granovetter: http://www.scribd.com/doc/24761082/Social-Networks-in-Silicon-Valley-Mark-Granovetter-et-al

Something must be really wrong with me because I like Buzz. I'm interacting with a ton of people who are not on Twitter or Facebook. If it's such a failure, why am I on it more than those other two sites combined anymore? And not because it's really my choice but because it's where most people I know are choosing to be?

I'd also suggest that the problems you highlight are most systematically considered by Goffman in his essay, Felicity's Condition http://www.jstor.org/pss/2779047

[...] In the week since Google introduced Buzz, the most interesting thing about the fiasco has been watching the company. For an organization as risk-averse and PR-aware as Google, a public failure offers insight that can’t be gleaned from watching daily operations. As Google attempts to fix the problems and move the conversation onward, I thought I might reflect on some of the teachable elements of this event. via fstutzman.com [...]
